Known Issues
Lights
- Occasional mismatched light elevation, particularly if camera switches between cockpit and external approaching the Hong Kong area - MSFS limitation, refer description
- Flash sequence between lights may be out of phase - MSFS limitation
- Insufficient amount of lights - Not explored at this time
Apron
- Mismatch colour at some aprons
- Dimensional inaccuracy - this is inherent to Gaya's Kai Tak scenery, to fix this would require pretty much a complete new scenery mesh from scratch
- Missing stop line labels - insufficient sources, investigating
- False airport VHHXG appears - required for additional spawn locations, ignore in normal usage (IT IS POSSIBLE AI AIRCRAFT MAY EXIHIBIT STRANGE BEHAVIOUR DUE TO THIS FALSE AIRPORT. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF IT OCCURS AND I WILL EXPLORE ALTERNATIVES)
Ground Poly
- Possible clipping with bridge objects - refining
- Dips at poly joins - MSFS limitation
- Clipping at seawall at 31 threshold end - MSFS limitation
- Various terraforming irregularities - MSFS limitation
AI Traffic
- AI traffic and built in ATC have not been tested and may not be fully compatible
Description
This addon seeks to improve the experience at the default Asobo/Gaya Simulations Kai Tak VHHX released with SU11. It combines existing addons, navdata from kychungdotcom, and my own lights extension and billboard replacement, as well as new content into a single package. Many historical references were used, but we are still seeking many more. Primary references are expensive and at the moment I am saving up to purchase more, hindering dev process a little bit.
Below lists main features added:
Lights
- Tilted light poles down to reduce overall height
- Brighter lights, hand placed positions
- MSFS SDK does not support light effect objects presently. There are 2 ways to create lights, both are inelegant. I have elected NOT to use models as LOD popping is too noticable with the size of these buibs, light rows are used instead
- Optional files are included for 2 associated addons that are REQUIRED, SamScene3D HK City Times (payware) or KAZE Hong Kong Kai Tak city (freeware)
- Runway lighting configuration
- High intensity with sequenced flashing strobes all the way to threshold
- High intensity with sequenced flashing strobes until 3rd crossbar
- Low intensity (red) with sequenced flashing strobes until 3rd crossbar
- SamScene configuration supports both departure and arrival into Kai Tak
- KAZE configuration supports arrivals into Kai Tak only
- Switching camera to external approaching the Hong Kong area could also cause the light elevation to be incorrect

- Improved humps at bridges - vehicles should not longer bounce and only experience a very slight bump when transiting over
- Improved Kowloon Tsai Park vegetation and poly
- Added localiser antenna object
- Demolished Shek Kip Mei Estate to a lower height
- Demolished Hoi Ying Estate and Hoi Tat Estate to a lower height
- Demolished Gardenia, Sevilla Crest and The Merrylands to a lower height
- Corrected some terrain spikes with KAZE's addon
- Adjusted checkerboard orientation to allow for proper use
- Optional checkerboard texture replacement to allow for proper use

Installation
Main Enhacement Content
- Copy the folder 'vhhx-kai-tak-enhancement-project' within the zip, and paste into your 'Community' folder
Optional Lights
- Open the 'Optional Extras' folder within the zip
- Select the folder that matches the Hong Kong city addon you are about to use
- Select the folder with the desired lighting configuration
- Copy the Lights.bgl and airport_VHHX.bgl
- Paste them into '..\vhhx-kai-tak-enhancement-project\Scenery\\kai-tak-enhancement-project\', overwrite the files when prompted
Optional Billboards Replacement
- If desired, backup the original textures, VHHX_AA_BANNERS_FS_ALB.PNG.DDS, VHHX_AA_BANNERS_FS_ALB_LOD2.PNG.DDS, and VHHX_AA_BANNERS_FS_ALB_LOD3.PNG.DDS, 'located in '../Packages/Official/"your platform"/microsoft-airport-vhhx-kaitak\scenery\Microsoft\KaiTak\texture'
- Open the 'Optional Extras' folder within the zip

1)notice in the optional lights folder there is arriving into and spawning from kai tak folders - which one is the best to use for best effect? (I both fly into and take off from the airport!)
2)can see in the optional approach folder (samscene) there are 3 options high low and normal lights - how do these differ and whats the most realisitc/recommended? (seem slightly different from the description which references 2 high intensity options )
3)running the samscene HK add on also (installed from the MSFS market) - does this require any special tweaking (extra files) to get it to work with Kai tak?(or does it work untweaked)
4)I use the enhancement add on with the enhanced/asobo kai tak (which I prefer) - but by accident left my other kai tak (redwing version) installed - and they appear to work together (the static aircraft from the redwing version look good) - just wondering how they are likely to work together (probably not recommended but assuming the actual asobo version would over right the redwing version for the airport model)

Hi,
I am using the KAZE HK Kai Tak City addon AND SamScene3D HK City Times as it is designed to work with the SamScene3D addon. So which optional approach lights files should I use, SamScene or KAZE?
I am guessing KAZE because it lowers the buildings near Kai Tak.

I recommend updating SamScene to latest version and ONLY use SamScene.
Both addons have updated since SU11 and now cause conflict. SamScene has now lowered buildings in the approach area, using low poly low detailed buildings, but accurate layout and style.
KAZE uses higher detail but modern Euro style buildings, looking a bit out of place. It also has some optimisation issues and causes microstutters, at least on my system.
So i recommend using the latest SamScene version ONLY.

What "folder that matches your Terrain LOD settings"? Where is the folder? In Community? In MSFS? In Steam? Same for the next instruction. Maybe you could clear it up, thanks.

You missed the top bullet point; it instructs you to open the 'Optional Extras' folder within the zip, then the second step instructs you to select an appropriate compliment addon to be used.
In anycase, SU12 has fundamentally changed how terraforming works and terrain LOD is no longer a factor for the lights positions. I will release an update hopefully next week with new config options.

PROBLEM SOLVED. This addon was not the cause, it was an external helper application causing the issue.
Hi, I have for a long time been happily and successfully using your and kychungdotcom's previous VHHX addons along with both SamScene3D HK City Times and KAZE Hong Kong Kai Tak city.For static aircraft at VHHX I have also been using Tigershark85000's "Microsoft SU11 VHHX static aircraft using AIG models":https://flightsim.to/file/44920/microsoft-su11-vhhx-static-aicrafts-using-aig-modelsThis all worked fine together before, but with this latest version of your addon I have a problem with the static aircraft. If I spawn cold and dark at VHHX everything is correctly in place and no problems, but if I use Kai Tak as a destination all the static aircraft start moving in random directions or ending up stuck on top of buildings as soon as I land. This also happens even if I only fly over Kai Tak airport.Any ideas what causes this? Maybe the terrain changes?1 years ago
Could you try to isolate which .bgl file is casuing this issue?. I'm not too certain why this is happening but figuring out which .bgl file causes this may give us some clues.

going to give this a try (with sam scene HK) and using the asobo kai tak - but how can you get traffic (moving and static) at the airport? (using vanilla FS traffic don't think as its a old airport anything will spawn?)

I'm afraid I don't know, sorry. I do not use any kind of AI traffic at all.
I would recommend trying to see if AI traffic spawn in vanilla MSFS WITHOUT this mod installed. If there is none, then I don't believe there is an easy way of having AI traffic without creating custom routes and such.

Hi, can you add yellowish light to the terminal to fit the apron? The default bright white one looks bad, kills the special atmosphere of Hong Kong.

I can't remove the white light entirely without also removing the lights posts. I could potentially try to wash out and overpower the white light with amber sodium, but there will still be some amount of white remaining. I'll also need to research if they were indeed sodium lamps at the terminal. If not, I would not change this.

Yes but I discourage it. I recommend using SamScene only.
If you do decide to use both, I would recommend using SamScene lights config, although functionality not guarenteed.

Also, I have a question:
In the Optional Approach Lighting folder, I think you forgot to put a description in the readme file for "kai-tak-lights-extension" and "kai-tak-navdata" folders in "High Intensity Full SF" folder.
I'm using Navigraph so I think I don't need kai-tak-navdata.
But do I still need your kai-tak-lights-extension?

WHOOOPS, those folders shouldn't be there. Please ignore them
In any case, even if you use Navigraph, you should use the included navdata which is enabled by default without need for user input. It provides adjustments to facility positions and guarantees usability with this mod.
Please if you could test for me if the 170 config files are suitable for 200? I believe 170 should cover 150-200. I haven't renamed it as such as I have not had a large enough sample to confirm this.
