The Château de Termes (Tèrme in Occitan ) is a so-called Cathar castle located in the department of Aude. At the heart of the Corbières mountains, Termes is located about forty kilometers south-east of Carcassonne.
Seat of a powerful feudal lordship, the site gave its name to the region, the Termenès. Irs lords have been known since the second half of the 9th century, and the castle is mentionned as early as the 12th century. Until the 13th century , its history is closely linked to the county and the viscounty of Carcassonne and to viscounts Trencavel. It was the refuge of many Cathars under the leadership of Raymond de Termes, vassal of the Viscount of Carcassonne in 1209. In 1210, during the crusade against the Albigeois, it underwent an important siege recounted in several chronicles. Simon de Montfort decided to seize Termes in 1210. The besieged surrendered because of thirst several months after the start of the siege.
In 1228, the castle then passed under the direct control of the King of France. Integrated into the network of fortresses defending the border with Aragon, following the Treaty of Corbeil in 1258, it constitutes one of its main strong points. The castle is one of the "five sons of Carcassonne" along with Quéribus, Peyrepertuse, Puilaurens and Aguilar. It was finally dismantled in 1654 because it was unused, shortly before the Treaty of the Pyrenees which moved the border with Spain to the south.
Built on a relief surrounded by steep slopes on three sides, the castle is only accessible from its southern face.
It consists of two concentric walls and included a dungeon which is no longer really visible as sections of its wall collapsed, probably as a result of its dismantling by powder during the 17th century. The layout of the upper enclosure is only partially perceptible, mainly in its southern and eastern parts.
The commune of Termes has been working for twenty years to enhance the site, which is one of the focal points of the "Pays Cathare" program developed by the General Council of Aude.
The castle is registered on 25th June 1951, then listed as a historic monument on 25th September 1989. In ruins, the castle has undergone major consolidation work, ad hoc archaeological approaches and topographical and architectural analysis.
The castle has been manually recreated from various photos and videos from the internet. It comes with its own POI.
